Changi Tower (5820m), located in the scenic Nangma Valley, is a notable peak within the Amin Massive, a collection of colossal granite formations in the upper reaches of Nangma. It’s approximately an eight-hour walk from Kande Village, which itself is a five-hour drive from Skardu. Most of the rock in Nangma Valley, predominantly granite, is well-known for its challenging climbing routes and formidable granite walls.
Key Climbing Highlights:
In 1998, the East Face of Changi Tower saw notable ascents.
The Australian/New Zealand all-women team—Abby Watkins, Vera Wong, and Nicola Woodford—successfully ascended Excess Baggage on the main summit route. Their climb involved tackling a crack system and snow slopes, with difficulties rated 5.10 and A2+.
New Zealand climbers New Norton and Paul Weber also ascended Just a Quickie, a route on the Changi Tower that involved navigating a corner system across 26 pitches, finishing on the North Summit.
The combination of granite, gneiss, and schist in Nangma makes these climbs both thrilling and technically demanding. With various teams continuously pushing boundaries, the Changi Tower remains a hotspot for serious climbers seeking challenging adventures in Pakistan’s rugged landscapes.
