Gasherbrum 1 8068m Hidden Peak Expedition 2025 - 2026 - Saltoro Summits Pakistan

Gasherbrum I, also known as Hidden Peak, is a prominent mountain in the Karakoram Range, part of the larger Himalaya mountain chain. It earned the nickname “Hidden Peak” because of its remote and concealed location among a cluster of towering peaks in one of the world’s most challenging landscapes. From an aerial perspective, the Karakoram region presents a stunning maze of mountains, with K2 standing out as the massive centerpiece among these formidable peaks. The Gasherbrum range, situated in the southeast, also captures the attention with its remarkable appearance.

The name “Gasherbrum” comes from the local language and means “Shining Wall,” a fitting description for these spectacular and majestic peaks.

The history of climbing Gasherbrum I is filled with determination and perseverance. The first attempt was made in 1936 by a French team led by H. De Segogne, but they struggled and couldn’t get beyond Camp Five, situated at an altitude of 6,797 meters. It wasn’t until 1958 that success was achieved. An American expedition led by Nich Clinch saw climbers Pete Schoening and Andy Kaufman become the first to stand on the summit, setting an important milestone in mountaineering.

Getting to the base camp of Gasherbrum I is a challenging endeavor. Climbers typically start their journey in Skardu, move through the scenic Shigar Valley, and traverse the Baltoro Glacier along with the southern Aburuzi glaciers. This demanding route is only viable during the summer months, particularly between June and August, when weather conditions are more favorable.

Gasherbrum I remains a symbol of human resilience and the quest for discovery. Its breathtaking landscapes and difficult terrain continue to attract mountaineers from around the world, leaving a lasting impact on climbing history.
